| About | Ron Long, 66, of Bedford, Virginia, a dedicated teacher, beloved coach, and devoted family man, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 6, 2025. Ron was preceded in death by his mother, Sherry Grossman; his father, Ronald Lawhorn; his daughter, Hannah Long; and his sister, Donna Petty. Ron was a graduate of Ithaca College, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army. For 22 years, Ron dedicated his professional life to education, teaching at both William Byrd and Staunton River. His true passion, however, was coaching, particularly wrestling. He poured his heart and soul into this role, viewing it as more than just a sport. Ron was a transformative leader who mentored countless students, helping them not only to excel athletically but also to grow into strong individuals. His generous spirit and unwavering dedication to helping others were central to his nature, leaving an indelible impact both in the school hallways and in the lives of those he encountered. Ron's devoted nature extended most profoundly to his family. He was a loving husband to his beloved wife, Linda Long, with whom he shared a proud 40 years of marriage. Nothing filled Ron's heart more than spending time with his family, especially his adored grandson, Troy Long. Whether they were enjoying a ride on the four-wheeler or simply being together, those moments were his greatest joy. Ron also found peace and pleasure in his many hobbies. He had a deep love for gardening, cultivating beautiful flowers, plants, and vegetables. He loved the game of golf hockey, was a big fan of the Buffalo Bills, and enjoyed the occasional game of rummy. His home was also filled with the unconditional love of his faithful dog, Precious, his cat, Patches, and his koi fish. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Linda Long; his son, Ronnie Long, Jr. (Erin); his grandson, Troy Long; his brothers, Rick Long (Lisa) and Sonny Long (TK); and his brother-in-law, Mike Schoenecker. Ron also leaves behind a host of extended family members, dear friends, and students whose lives he touched in lasting ways. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Roanoke Valley Wrestling Association (www.roanokevalleywrestling.com/contact), an organization close to Ron's heart. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at Mineral Springs Baptist Church, with Pastor Jason Gault officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends a the church one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are being handled by Oakey's Vinton Chapel - (540) 982-2100. |
