| About | Jack Douglas Proctor, died on October 7, 2025. Jack was born on July 26, 1930 in Randolph County, North Carolina and was the son of John Hillons Proctor and Jessie Brown Proctor. Jack grew up in the Roanoke area along with his two brothers and three sisters, where he graduated from William Byrd High School in Vinton. He attended the Medical College of Virginia where he first earned his pharmacy degree and later his MD in 1962. Jack served in the U.S. Navy in Newport, Rhode Island and in Japan as a communications officer, and retired as a Captain in the Medical Corps, Naval Reserve, in 1999. Jack did his internship and residency training at MCV, and spent his entire career practicing Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology at MCV and then VCU Health. Jack also served as a Board Member and Chairman of the Virginia Voluntary Formulary Board, having been appointed by two Governors. Jack held a deep love for history, and was known for his kindness, generosity and keen intellect. Jack married the love of his life, Julia "Julie" O'Neal in 1991 and they enjoyed many happy years together in their home in Richmond, and traveling to various countries whenever their schedules permitted. Jack and Julie's interests included opera and theatre. Jack was also a British car enthusiast and enjoyed owning and driving his 1957 Jaguar, 1976 MGB and 2007 Aston Martin. In addition to his wife, Julie, Jack is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held for Jack at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Avenue in Richmond on Monday, October 27, 2025 at 1 p.m. with service to follow at 2 p.m. A reception in honor of Jack will be held at the Commonwealth Club, 411 West Franklin Street, following the service at 3:30 p.m. Burial will take place at a later date at the Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery, in Trinity, North Carolina.
