| About | It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of John “Johnny” Vassar, Jr., age 52, a devoted husband, cherished father, beloved grandfather, and loving son. Johnny left us unexpectedly, and his family is still reeling from the loss of a man whose presence brought joy, laughter, and unwavering love. Johnny was the heart of his family — a steady hand, a kind soul, and a source of endless support. He was known not only for his deep compassion but also for his playful spirit and goofy sense of humor. Whether it was a silly joke, a spontaneous dance, or a lighthearted prank, Johnny had a gift for making people smile. His laughter was contagious, and his ability to find joy in the everyday was a blessing to all who knew him. Johnny was born on January 20, 1973, in Roanoke, VA, to John and Norma Vassar Sr. He graduated from William Byrd High School, class of 1991. Throughout his career, Johnny was known for his dedication, work ethic, and leadership. He worked as a Field Superintendent for HVAC at GJHopkins, where he spent 23 years making a meaningful impact and forming lasting friendships. His colleagues remember him not only for his capabilities to meet deadlines but also for the warmth and humor he brought to the workplace. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Vassar; his children, Desiree Bare, Nathaniel Zimmerman, John III (Camrie), Nicholas, Jacob Giebner (Kenzie), Kaleb, and Sierra; his grandchildren who called him “Fun Pop,” Riley, Charity, Waylen, and Brynlynn; and his parents, John and Norma. Also surviving are his siblings, Christy Nodes (Donald), Sophia, and Tabitha Haston (Brian). Each of them carries forward his memory with deep love and gratitude for the time they had together. Preceded in death is his sibling, Benjamin. The family kindly requests privacy as they navigate this challenging time and grieve the loss of someone so dear. A funeral service will be held at Oakey’s North Chapel on Sunday, September 14, 2025 at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Services will be open to the public as the family welcomes everyone who knew and loved Johnny as they did. |
