Marie Webb Layman, 103, passed away peacefully in Lewis-Gale Hospital on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. Born on October 1, 1913, she lived a long and full life in Roanoke County.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years,.Glenver Nininger Layman.
She is survived by her sons, Jimmy N. Layman (Florine) of Durham, N.C. and Wayne W. Layman (Carol) of Stuart, Fla.; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Layman of Durham, N.C., Annette Layman of Durham, N.C., Edward Layman (Kim) of Tequesta, Fla., David Layman (Heidi) of Stuart, Fla., and Juliann Savarese (Tommy) of Stuart, Fla.; and seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by her cousin, Jewel Shepherd Tyree of Salem, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marie was a homemaker for many years and remained active in the 4-H Club from an early age, having been inducted into the Honor All-Star Organization in 1932. She graduated from Vinton High School in 1932. She was employed by Miller & Rhoads Department Store and Woolco Stores for many years in the Advertising Department and, upon retirement, founded and operated Layman Engraving for more than twenty years. She enjoyed her flowers gardens, entertaining and having family and friends nearby.
The family wishes to express their many thanks to Brandon Oaks Assisted Living, and Brandon Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the wonderful care she received while living there and to her special care givers, Nancy Fulcher, Joyce Brown and Teresa Hardy for their loving care. Special appreciation also goes to the nurses and staff of Lewis Gale Hospital and to Gentle Shepherd Hospice of Roanoke.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, 2017 in the Mausoleum Chapel in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Robert Alderman and Mr. Carlton Wright. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road.
