About | ADKINS, Annie Frances, 87, of Vinton, went to her Heavenly home on Friday, January 11, 2002 from Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem. She was predeceased by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Otha F. Adkins, Sr., one sister, Goldie May Adkins, four brothers and three sisters-in-law, James Letcher "Buck" and Ruth Adkins, Robert Wilson and Nellie Adkins, Otha F. Adkins, Jr., and William Davis and Elizabeth "Libby" Adkins. She is survived by one sister, Elizabeth A. Stout and her husband, B. C. of Roanoke; also a sister-in-law, Carrie Maxine Adkins. She is also survived by the following nieces and nephews and their spouses, Jimmy Adkins and Vicky, Josef Adkins, Brenda Robinson and Kyle, Stuart Lee Adkins and Debbie, J. V. Adkins and Linda, Denise Reedy and Glenn, Vicki Stinnette and Mike, William D. Adkins, II, and Cathy, Diane Thompson and Tommy, Betty Kirstein of Norfolk and Tommy C. Stout and Linda of Austinville. Also surviving are 28 great-nieces and nephews and 16 great-great-nieces and nephews. Frances was an educator in the Roanoke Valley for 46 years. She graduated from Averett College in Danville, from James Madison in Harrisonburg and received her Masters Degree from the University of Virginia. She began her teaching career at Roland E. Cook in 1934, then went to Mt. Vernon as a teaching principal, on to Forest Park and retired in June 1980 as Principal of Roland E. Cook. She was an honorary life member of the National Congress of Parents & Teachers and of the Virginia Congress of Parents & Teachers, held life memberships in Virginia Retired Teachers Association. She also had lifetime memberships in the Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a retired member of Kappa Delta Pi and a lifetime member of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the AARP and League of Older Americans. She was a member of Vinton Baptist Church from early childhood and took an active part until failing health prevented her from doing so. She received care in her home until recently and appreciated the services of Norma and Sandra especially, as well as that from other caregivers. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery. |
