About William Andrew "Jack" Snyder, 82, of Vinton, Va., passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2009. He was born on November 26, 1926, in Roanoke, Va., to the late Herbert and Dewey Snyder He was also preceded in death by one brother, Francis N. Snyder; and two sisters, Eleanor Webb and Iris McCallum. Jack was a member of Lynn Haven Baptist Church. He retired from Norfolk Southern in 1987 after 45 faithful years of service. He was an avid sports fan and played football, baseball, basketball and ran tack for William Byrd High School. He joined the Navy during World War II and served on the USS Zenobia as seaman 1st class. He enjoyed bowling, square dancing, family and friends. Jack was a kind and caring man whose keen sense of humor brought joy to those around him. He will be missed by so many. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Geneva Reed; daughter, Sabrena Gumbert and husband, Larry, of Texas; and son, Kurt Dwayne and wife, Donna Snyder of West Virginia. Known as "D-dad" to his five beloved grandchildren, Mallorie Daniels and husband, Andrew, of Texas, Bradlen Binner, of Roanoke, Kaleb, Joshua, and Levi Snyder, of West Virginia. Also surviving are five brothers and sisters; sister, Gretna and husband, Ray Hostutler, of Roanoke, Wesley Snyder and wife, Coke, of New Hampshire; brother, Herbert Snyder and wife, Dixie; brother, David Snyder and wife, Ann; and sister, Phyllis Haupt, of Roanoke. Jack is also survived by many special nieces and nephews, dear friends and wonderful neighbors, well as his beloved cat, "Yo." The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with the Pastor Edward Creel officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.
