About Curtis A. Cooper, 85, of Vinton, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 27, 2011. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific, graduated from William Byrd High School and attended Carson Newman College. He retired from Verizon where he was a member of the Pioneers. He was a lifetime deacon and chairman of the ushers at Vinton Baptist Church. Curtis was also a lifetime member of the Vinton Host Lions Club and a member of the Roanoke Valley Sports Club. Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Ola Cooper; brothers, James, Howard and Gene Cooper; and sister, Catherine Silver. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma Jean Mitchell Cooper; sister, Helen Thomason, of Rocky Mount; sisters-in-law, Betty Mitchell, Sara Cooper and Sue Shaver; a number of nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Anita Bolton and family. A special thanks to all of his friends for their continuing love and support. Additionally the family would like to express their gratitude to the staff and friends at Carrington Place for their excellent care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Vinton Baptist Church's Music Ministry. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 30, 2011, at Vinton Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. William R. Booth officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 29, 2011, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.
