About	Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Starkey Skipper, 83, of Roanoke, passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2011. She was born in Roanoke to the late Laura and Daniel Starkey, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Skipper. Surviving are two sons, Gary Skipper and wife, Lois, and Larry Skipper and wife, Jacquie; her grandchildren, Sandy, Gary and wife, Christina, Nicholas and Michelle; her sister, Elsie Beer; a brother, Joe Starkey and wife, Doris; and her best friend, Benji. Mrs. Skipper was a member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Iota Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, and was a member of the Caroloa Chorus. Mrs. Skipper played guitar in the group at Greene Memorial. She was a 1946 graduate of William Byrd High School, and also graduated from Empire College. She worked for the State of New York at Pilgrim State Hospital and had also worked on Wall Street. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave. The Rev. Gary Robbins will officiate. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, October 10, 2011.
