About | James Wendell Reynolds, 89, of Vinton, died Tuesday, January 24, 2012. Jimmy was born April 9, 1922, the son of James William Reynolds and Maude Swain Reynolds. He graduated from William Byrd High School in 1939, and from Roanoke College in 1943, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. He served during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps in the Southwest Pacific Theater. After the war, he returned to Vinton and joined the family agricultural supply business, becoming president and manager of Reynolds Grain Company after the death of his father. In 1950, Jimmy married Anita Carroll, and they enjoyed a wonderful life together. Jimmy was a lifelong member of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School teacher, trustee, and where he sang in the choir for 75 years. He was active in the affairs of his beloved town of Vinton, having served as council member and vice-mayor. He was past president of the Vinton Lion's Club and the Vinton Chamber of Commerce. Jimmy received a Melvin Jones Fellow Award by the Lion's Club for his dedicated service. He was also a board member and past president of the Virginia State Feed Association. Jimmy enjoyed being an active member of the Barbershop Harmony Chorus for twenty years. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William V. Reynolds; and sister, Louise R. Green. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anita Carroll Reynolds; son, James Carroll Reynolds and wife, Betty, of Vinton; daughter, Jeanne Reynolds Lowery and husband, William, of Pittsview, Ala.; sister, Irene Reynolds Tucker; four grandchildren, James Phillip Reynolds, Anne Reynolds Simmons and husband, Chad, Carroll Elizabeth Lowery, and Kathryn Virginia Lowery; and many nephews, nieces and friends. The family is thankful for the love and care extended to their husband and father during his illness by the staff of At Home Caregivers, Inc., and extended family members and friends. The family will welcome friends and guests from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m Friday, January 27, 2012, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 28, 2012, at Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton, with Pastor B. Failes officiating. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church, 707 East Washington Avenue, Vinton, VA 24179, or to your favorite charity.
