About Hill, Helen Sue Ann Plunkett, 79, of Bent Mountain, died Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born August 26, 1932 in Vinton, to the late Carol West and Harry Gordon Plunkett. She was also predeceased by her brother, Carroll H. (Pete) Plunkett and husband Frank Hazel Hill. Sue was graduated from William Byrd High School and Radford University, where she served in student leadership positions. She also earned a Master's Degree from Virginia Tech. After teaching at Jefferson High School in the late 1950s, Sue returned to Radford University to volunteer for and from 1967-73 direct the Alumnae Association. In 1973, she joined the Federal Courts system, as a federal probation officer. She then studied at Fordham University, distinguished as one of the first women graduates of the Master in Criminal Justice program. She finished her federal career as the first director of the Western District of Virginia - Office of Pretrial Services. Sue's final vocation was in marketing for Hill Studio. Brimming with "can -do" spirit throughout these business pursuits, Sue also shared this dedication to spiritual endeavors. She first joined Thrasher Memorial Methodist Church in Vinton, and was later active at Trinity and Windsor Hills United Methodist Churches in Roanoke, and Mt. Union Brethren Church in Bent Mountain. In the non-profit sector, Sue was active in the Y-teens, Future Business Leaders of America, WBRA- Public Television, and Junior Women's Clubs and with the Radford University Alumnae Association. She is survived by her son David; daughter Betsy; grandchildren Charlie, Mickey, Elizabeth and Catherine; brother Harry and Barbara Plunkett of Virginia Beach; in-laws Mildred Nuckols of Spartanburg, SC: Norma Hill of Blacksburg; nieces and nephews and close cousins Alisa, Alison, Arthur, Billy, Bobby, Helen, Lynn, Michael, Penny, and Peter, Ron, Mark and Mary Jay, many grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and granddog Walter. A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday May 14, 2012, at Windsor Hills United Methodist Church, corner of Windsor Road and Mud Lick Road. Memorials may be made to the memory of Sue P. Hill to the Radford University Foundation or to Bethany House in Roanoke.
