About | On Sunday, July 15, 2012, surrounded by her loved ones, Norma Pattison Wirt went to be with the Lord. Norma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be greatly missed. She will forever be remembered for her gracious, kind, generous, laughter-loving spirit. Norma is a lifetime Roanoke resident, born in 1931 in Vinton, VA to Robert Brown Pattison and Thelma Coleman Pattison. She graduated from William Byrd High School in 1950 and Lewis Gale Nursing School in 1953. She was an RN for the Roanoke Health Department and Lewis Gale Hospital for 40 Years, caring for countless adults and newborns. Service and devotion to family and community were the hallmark of Norma's life. She was a member of Midway Christian Church and later Virginia Heights Baptist Church where she was a deacon, worked in the church nursery, and taught Sunday School. Norma was always available in the neighborhood if someone needed nursing or a child needed watching. She also participated in the greater community, giving her time and energies to the March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, the Family Deacon Service in her church, the Roanoke Junior Women's club, and as an honorary survivor for Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure in Phoenix in 2008. Norma leaves behind her best friend and devoted husband, Doug; her beloved daughters, Laura Morris, Melissa Wirt and partner Chris Pruett, and Gracey Humbert and partner Chris Stump; her precious granddaughters Christina Gill, Whitney Morris, Camille Humbert and great granddaughter Allison Wilhelm; her loving brother James Pattison; her friends and brothers-in-law, Jack Wirt and Herbert Wirt, her dear "sisters," Darlene Garrett, Norma Lee Wirk and Margaret Pattison; and cherished nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. The family would like to thank everyone for their visits, prayers, thoughts and many acts of kindness and support. Your love for Norma and for us is very much appreciated. Visitation will be held at Oakey's South Chapel on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8 and a funeral service will be conducted at Oakey's South Chapel on Wednesday at 2:00 PM with Rev. C. Nelson Harris officiating. Interment to follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family request that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Cave Spring Rescue Squad, the American Cancer Society or Virginia Heights Baptist Church. |
