About Jean Short Hutson, 82, of Vinton, VA, passed away on December 30, 2016, in Roanoke, VA.

Jean was born in Roanoke, VA, to George K. Short and Dorothy H. Short on October 22, 1934. She graduated from William Byrd High School in 1952. She went on to earn a degree in Home Economics from Virginia Tech.

After spending 22 years as an Army wife, following her husband and raising her children around the world, she worked in a number of roles as a professional home economist. She enjoyed racing cars, Airstream caravanning, sewing, quilting, ham radio, travel and adventures of all kinds.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leonard Earl Hutson.

Jean is survived by her sons, Richard Hutson (Rhonda) of Fayetteville, North Carolina; John Hutson (Vivian) of Fairbanks, Alaska; and Joseph Hutson (Alex) of Gainesville, Virginia, as well as her special niece, Terri Phlegar (Alan) of Vinton. She is also survived by her siblings, Ellen Lotts, Carol Richardson, Jim Short, Eloise LaReau, George Short, and Ralph Short, and brother-in-law Fred Hutson and their spouses, as well as her grandchildren, Katherine Battisti, Elizabeth Mordensky, Stephanie Hutson, Joseph Hutson, and Bill Hutson, great-grandson Paul Battisti, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Visitation will be held at Oakey’s Funeral Home in Vinton on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, from 2-4 pm and from 6-8 pm.

Funeral service will be held at Vinton Baptist Church on Wednesday January 4, 2017, at 2:00 pm. The service will be officiated by Rev. Dr. Chris Monroe. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
