About Anne Conner (Annie Jane) Thacker , of Roanoke, Va., died peacefully on Thursday, March 1, 2018, with family by her side. A spirited soul, Anne was born on May 3, 1926, to the late Bill and Ida Stanley Conner. The third of seven children, Anne grew up in Roanoke, graduating from William Byrd High School. She retired from Sears Roebuck and was active in many organizations including the Eastern Star, Christian Women’s Club, Garden Club, Roanoke Credit Women’s Association, and the Red Hat Society. Following retirement, she enjoyed assisting customers at Fink’s Jewelers. Anne was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Charles B. Thacker; son, C. Michael Thacker; brothers, Alvin, Bobby and Billy Conner; and sister, Pauline Main. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Pamela T. (Frank) Peck of Roanoke; son, Douglas B. (Noni) Thacker of Winter Park, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Victoria Thacker of Roanoke; sister, Teenie Funk of Roanoke; brother, Galen (Laura) Conner of Vinton; and sister-in-law, Becky Conner of Vinton. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Wensday (Michael) Tumulak of Roanoke, Jeffrey (Tonya) Ursoy of Frederick, Colo., Alexandra Thacker of Roanoke, Jillian “JJ” Thacker and Douglas “Budd” Thacker both of Sanford, Fla., and Charles Thacker of Huntersville , N.C.; stepgrandchildren, Matthew Peck and Maureen (Jason) Green of Roanoke; and her great-grandchildren, Callen and Delaney Tumulak, Savannah and Caden Ursoy, Noah Peck and Addisen Green. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. Anne was known by family and friends as always representing the fiery side of our family, with her red hair and fabulously matching outfits. She loved football and the family alumni schools of Virginia Tech and Virginia Military Institute, where her sons played, were her favorites. Anne was an excellent cook and enjoyed celebrating every family occasion by preparing a delicious meal. Egg hunts in the backyard were a highlight of the Easter celebration. An animal lover, Anne was rarely without the companionship of a pet dog or cat. For many years she and her husband enjoyed dressing in formal attire for parties and dances at the Kazim Temple, Moose Lodge, and other social events. She loved to be outdoors and could often be found working in her yard and flower beds. Both Anne and her husband enjoyed going to auctions and flea markets and decorating their home with their many purchases A Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Oakey’s South Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Special thanks to the staff at Richfield’s Joseph C. Thomas Center. Memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Angels of Assisi, or to a favorite charity.
