About | Martha Jean Cooper Ransom, 85, of Moneta, Virginia, passed away peacefully and went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 2, 2021. She was born on April 3, 1935, in Roanoke, Virginia, the oldest of Ernest and Daisy Cooper's seven children. Martha graduated from William Byrd High School and National Business College. She worked as a bookkeeper at Sears, Roebuck and Company for 18 years, and then at William Byrd High School (WBHS), retiring from Roanoke County Public Schools after 25 years. Martha Jean loved her job at WBHS, especially the staff and students, and was often found selling tickets at most athletic events, even well into her retirement. She will be remembered for her unending kindness, cheery smile, and willingness to lend a helping hand. Martha enjoyed playing piano and was a huge animal lover, endlessly doting on her dogs, cats, squirrels, and birds. Her latest rescued and adopted fur baby was Alex, a terrier mix. Martha Jean's post retirement years were filled taking trips with family and friends, enjoying the sunshine and flowers, and spending time with her beloved husband attending bluegrass music events, watching NASCAR on TV and taking long drives through the countryside. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of nearly 63 years, Winfred Padgett Ransom; her daughter, Linda Ransom Drum; her son, Linwood Ransom; her granddaughter, Kara Ransom; and her great-granddaughter, Kyla Sheaff. She is also survived by her brother, Marvin Cooper and wife, Irene; her sister, Earnestine Peters; her sister, Nancy Draper and husband, Barry; and many loved nieces and nephews. Her son, Larry Ransom, her brother, Henry Cooper, and her sisters, Phyllis Hunter and Patsy Harris, preceded her in death. Special thanks go to the staff of Berkshire Health & Rehab and First Choice Hospice for their care and professional guidance during the past several months of Martha's life. The family will receive friends from 2 until 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 7, 2021, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. The Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 8, 2021, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with Tino Maciel of Life Tabernacle officiating. Burial will follow the service at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the ASPCA and/or Alzheimer's Foundation of America will be appreciated.
