About | Mary Lorraine Powers Cochran of Roanoke, Virginia, died on Tuesday, November 9, 2021. She was 89. She lived her entire life in the Roanoke Valley. Mary was born on February 5, 1932, to Bessie and Lester Powers. She had fond memories of growing up with her close-knit siblings and friends in Vinton and attending William Byrd High School. As a young woman, Mary worked at Roanoke Garment Company. She later spent many years working as an aide with elementary school students in the Roanoke City Public Schools. She loved working with children, and they loved her in return. Mary was married to Calvin Cochran for 56 years, until he died in 2017. She and Calvin were long-time members of Hollins Road Baptist Church, where they enjoyed the fellowship of many friends in their Joyful Servants Sunday School class. Mary and Calvin were predeceased by their beloved son, Curtis Lynn Cochran of Roanoke, who died in 2006. Mary is survived by her daughter, Corby Anderson and her "favorite" son-in-law, Bill, of Charlotte, N.C.; her granddaughter, Carly Ingersoll, Carly's husband, Deuce, and their children, Nora and Henry, of Charlotte, N.C.; and her granddaughter, Grace Anderson of Washington, D.C. Mary is also survived by loving nieces and nephews, including Bobby and Sandra Boone of Boones Mill, Va., Jay and Janie Shifflett of Goodview, Va., and Danny and Marge Powers of Elizabethtown, Tenn.; and by her great-nieces and great-nephews, Amber Reed and Mike Greer of Vinton, Va., Scott and Sherry Boone of Troutville, Va., and Billy Shifflett of Goodview, Va. Mary's family will receive friends from 3 until 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 11, 2021, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 627 Hardy Road, Vinton, where a service celebrating her life will be held at 12 noon on Friday, November 12, 2021, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Mark Washington officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband and son in Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton, Va.
