About | Dr. Carlton Haywood Jr. was born on January 26, 1976, in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Haywood, affectionately known as "CJ", was the firstborn child to Carlton Haywood, Sr. and Harriett Scarborough Haywood. CJ was born again when he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized in a lake, Priest Lake, located in Nashville, TN. He transitioned from his earthly life on Friday, December 31, 2021, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. At the age of 3, CJ was diagnosed with sickle cell disease. While he experienced sickle cell crises throughout his childhood and adolescent years, it did not impede his academic success. CJ persevered and maintained an A average. In fact, he graduated from William Byrd High School in Vinton, VA with honors, ranking among the top ten graduates in the class. CJ's doctoral research, dissertation and doctoral training were funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. He received a Ph.D. in Bioethics and Health Policy from Johns Hopkins University. It is at Johns Hopkins University (School of Medicine) where CJ served as Assistant Professor in the Division of Hematology. CJ conducted bioethics and health services research related to sickle cell disease. uring CJ's career, he co-authored several research-based articles that were published in a variety of medical journals, including the Journal of Health Psychology, Genetics in Medicine and the American Journal of Hematology. In 2014, CJ was recognized by Ebony Magazine on its Power 100 list – an annual celebration of the most influential and inspiring men and women in the African American community. CJ was also inducted into the Alpha Chapter of the Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society. CJ is survived by his parents: Carlton Haywood, Sr. and Harriett Scarborough Haywood; sisters, Tamara Haywood and Akiah Haywood; brother, Atu Haywood; nieces, Amara, Jayla, Ahmaya, Nala, and Emery Rae; nephews: Braylen and Khalil; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and colleagues. |
