About | The gates of Heaven opened and welcomed our earthly angel, Nannie "Nan" Diane Childress, into eternal rest on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at the age of 71. She was born May 24, 1951, to the late James and Virginia Childress, Sr., of Vinton, VA. Nannie was preceded in death by her sister, Beatrice Childress, and brother, James "Hoolie" Childress, Jr. Educated in Roanoke County Public Schools, she attended Craig Avenue Elementary School and graduated from William Byrd High School in 1970. At an early age, she became a member of First Baptist Church of Vinton and was a dedicated member until her passing. Nan loved her pastor and church family. She was always ready to share a testimony about the goodness of the Lord, which she always prefaced with, "I thank the Lord for my space in the building this morning!" Throughout her adult life, she had several occupations, which included: Harris Hardwood, Singer Furniture, Lions Cleaner, and lastly, A Cleaner World, before retiring. Her hobbies and interests were fishing; visiting yard sales, thrift stores, and flea markets; and gardening. She also served as secretary of the Gladetown-Carline and Midway Reunion Committee. Those left to cherish and embrace her sweet memory are her sisters, Bernice Robinson, Theresa Childress, and Harriet Childress of Vinton, VA, and Lena (Glenn) Dent of Roanoke, VA; brother, Harry Childress of Vinton, VA; close family; an adopted sister, Evelyn (Casey) Macauley of Vinton, VA; a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and the love of her life for more than fifty years, James Wilson, Jr. The family truly admires the love and care you've shown to our beloved "Nan" through the years.
