About It is with great sadness that we share the news that Elsie Craighead Wertz, an extraordinary wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 5, 2024.

A devoted wife to Ezera E. Wertz for 68 years and mother to three daughters, Elsie attended William Byrd High School in Roanoke before co-managing the Wertz Farm and Wertz Country Store on the Roanoke City Market. Elsie's most enjoyable years were raising her three children, and flower gardening with endless rose varieties. Sewing and photography filled her years, and she was well known for her canning and jelly-making skills. She was active for over sixty years at Poages Mill Church of the Brethren, including ten years as treasurer and deaconess, spending her final years at Oak Grove Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by daughters, Robin Craig and her husband, Robert, of Scottsdale Arizona, and Sharon Wertz of Roanoke, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Ezera; her daughter, Karen Young; brother, Alvin B. Craighead; and parents, Milton and Mabel Craighead.

Visitation is the most meaningful gift you can give to the elderly. The family recognizes the many years of friendship and numerous visits during her final years from Harold Stump, Jane Fralin Grisso, and Pastor Tim Harvey.

Those wishing to honor her life can plant a flower, visit an elderly person, or donate to Apple Ridge Farms in Floyd County, her grandparents' property she enjoyed visiting during the summers of her youth.

A private burial is planned.
