About William Murphy Scott, 89, of Salem, Va., passed away Thursday, May 14, 2009. Murphy served in the United States Army with the 116th Inf., 29th Div., Company H. He landed on Omaha Beach in the Third Wave on D-Day and received two purple hearts. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech. Murphy retired from Roanoke County Schools, where he served as a teacher, guidance counselor, and assistant principal. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Scott; parents, Mattie Lera and William P. Scott; and sisters, Mildred Snider and Mary Anderson. Surviving family includes wife, Evelyn Scott; Doug (Debbie) Scott; daughter, Gail (Richard) Jennings; granddaughter, Jennifer (Trevor) Shannon; grandson, Matthew (Brittany) Jennings; great-grandson, Tyler Shannon; sisters, Mabel Walker, Dorris Woodall, Betty Jenkins, Patsy Hopkins, Edith Oliver, and Barbara Chisom; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be take place 11 a.m. on Monday, May 18, 2009, at Lotz Funeral Home, Salem. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, May 17, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in his name to the National D-Day Memorial, P.O. Box 77, Bedford, Va. 24523.
