Janet was a passenger in a car on the night of Saturday, February 17, 1962. The car tried to cross over some railroad tracks a half mile north of Vinton in Roanoke when it was struck by the Norfolk & Western freight train. The engineer, R. F. Bussey, said there was no way he could stop the train when the car came onto the tracks. Janet died enroute to the hospital.
