About | Anita Carroll Reynolds, 98, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2022, leaving behind family and friends who loved her dearly. Anita was born in 1924 in Cool Springs, North Carolina and graduated from high school in Hurtsboro, Alabama in 1941. She graduated from Alabama State College for Women, now the University of Montevallo, in 1945. Her college years coincided with World War II where she experienced rationing and blackouts in her dormitory. Her teaching career began in Montgomery, Alabama and marriage in 1950 brought her to Vinton, Virginia. She taught business subjects at William Byrd High School for 24 years and enthusiastically participated in numerous school activities and clubs. She was a life member of the PTA and Roanoke County Retired Teachers Association as well as Delta Kappa Gamma, a national honor society for women educators. She was a long-time devoted member of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church. In her younger years she enjoyed membership of the Roanoke Valley Cotillion Club. Anita possessed the unique quality for always seeing the good in every person and situation. She will be remembered for her friendly personality, her positive attitude, unfailing kindness, and signature red hair. Preceding her in death were her parents, Leith and Maude Carroll and her brother, Gene Carroll. Her husband, James W. Reynolds, preceded her in death after 61 years of marriage. Anita is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Betty Reynolds of Fincastle, Virginia, and her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Bill Lowery of Pittsview, Alabama. She is survived by four grandchildren, Anne Simmons and husband, Chad, J. Phillip Reynolds and wife, Kristin, Carroll Rhea and husband, Keaton, and Kathryn Lowery and fiancé, Michael Donohue. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Aida, Ellison, and Clara Simmons, and James Reynolds, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. The family is grateful for the loving care extended to their mother by the gracious staff at Hermitage of Roanoke, Good Samaritan Hospice, as well as family, friends, and caregivers while at home. Visitation will be held from 12 noon until 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2022, at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel. Her Funeral Service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hermitage of Roanoke/Samaritan Fund Program, 1009 Old Country Club Road, Roanoke, VA 24017 or to Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church Music Fund, 707 East Washington Avenue, Vinton, VA 24179. |
