About Alfred C. (Fred) Anderson, 73, of Vinton, Va., passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2016. Fred was the son of Edna Dearing Anderson of Vinton, and the late W.H. “Billy” Anderson. Fred was a graduate of William Byrd High School and East Tennessee State University. Early in his career, he taught 8th grade Geography at Northside High School as well as History and Government at Cave Spring High School. Fred served as Treasurer of Roanoke County for 28 years. He often joked that, “When I started, they were not using the quill pen, but it hadn’t been gone long!” Under Fred’s guidance, the Treasurer’s Office became computerized and assumed the modernized operational path that it today occupies. His efforts and contributions vastly improved the overall performance of the office. Fred’s dedication and service were recognized by both the Treasurer’s Association of Virginia (TAV) in 1989 and the National Association of County Treasurers & Financial Officers (NACTFO) in 1996 as Treasurer of the Year. He served both TAV and NACTFO as President. As a retired president, Fred was often requested to invest the duties of each new slate of officers, always with the enduring gratitude and appreciation of the incoming president. After his retirement, Fred was unexpectedly and pleasantly surprised to receive the Lifetime Service Award from the TAV. He was especially proud of this achievement. Fred was a long-standing member of Vinton Masonic Lodge #204 AF & AM where he served as treasurer for almost 40 years; a member of the Order of Eastern Star having served as a Worthy Patron for nine years; and he was also a member of the Vinton Host Lions Club for nearly 50 years and served three terms as Lion President. Fred was the husband of Ann Melinda Riley Anderson of Farmville. Fred and Ann were together for 45 years. After their marriage, they became active members of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church, where they taught Sunday School and served on numerous church committees. Fred was a teacher of the Pedigo Class for many years. He was the father of United States Army Major Charles “Chuck” Anderson and his wife, Dr. Karen Anderson, currently stationed at Camp Shelby, Miss., and Claudine Anderson Hunt and her husband, Dr. David Hunt, of Tennessee. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Paul and Davis Anderson along with Clara Kay and Lyle Hunt. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor B. Failes officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 30, 2016 with a Masonic Service given by Vinton Masonic Lodge #204 AF & AM at 7 p.m at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church, 707 East Washington Ave., Vinton, VA 24179. Arrangements by Oakey's Vinton Chapel.
