About Kay Louette Gillum Meredith, 72, of Midlothian, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 5, 2017, after a sudden illness. She was the cherished wife of William W. Meredith III for 52 years; beloved mother of Laura (Scott) Heitland and Edward Meredith; treasured Maw of Meredith and Jackson Heitland; and dear sister of Thomas (Loretta) Gillum and Carola (Julian) Bell. Kay was born in Buckhannon, West Virginia and later spent her high school years in Roanoke, Virginia at William Byrd High School. After graduating from Radford University, Kay began her teaching career in Prince William County, then later in both the Tidewater and BaltimoreWashington D.C. area. She spent her final 22 years of teaching at Powhatan High School. Kay’s legacy lies in the lasting impact she had on the countless students she considered privileged to teach for more than 35 years. She loved her students and championed them year after year. Kay has been described as a warrior and force in education, often wielding humor, wit and her unrelenting passion as a teacher to develop the minds and improve the lives of so many. She served as mentor to colleagues and students alike. Kay lived her life in the same way she taught, with a seemingly endless supply of positive attitude, spirit, humor and smiles. She conquered breast cancer twice. She loved traveling with her husband, Bill, especially to Williamsburg and the beaches of Virginia and North Carolina. She read extensively and enjoyed literature and poetry. She drove her Mazda Miata with the top down and her sunglasses on. In recent years, Kay particularly enjoyed working on her beautiful gardens and listening to the sounds of the owls and other birds from her back porch. Above all, she loved and lived for her husband, children, grandchildren and her English Springer Spaniel, Cheyenne. She will be dearly missed. Visitation for family, friends and students will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 9, at Woody Funeral Home, Huguenot Chapel, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian, Va. 23113. Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 10, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, 60 East 56th St, 8th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10022.
