About | Christine Ferguson Huddleston went home to be with her Heavenly Father on January 2, 2018 at the age of 95. She was the eldest of three children born to the late Edmund Twilley and Addie Dickinson Ferguson. She was predeceased in 2006 by her husband of almost 61 years, John Francis (Jack) Huddleston; in 1982 by sister, Jean Ferguson Creasy; in 1991 by brother, Edmund T. (Buddy) Ferguson, Jr., in 2005 by his wife Frances, in 2016 by a nephew, Rayburn L. Creasy, and in 2017 by a niece Carolyn H. Saunders. Christine is survived by her son, Neil F. Huddleston of Moneta , VA; daughter, Cindy H. Browder and husband Linwood of Bruington, VA; grandchildren: Scott C. Huddleston of Roanoke and Zoie M. Browder of Bruington; former brother-in-law Perry (Dick) Creasy and wife Mary of Vinton; nephews: Michael E. Ferguson and wife Linda of Stewartsville; M. Winston Saunders and wife Judy of Roanoke; nieces: Sue C. Proctor and husband Ross Hart of Roanoke; Patti F. Stockman and husband Steve of Houston, Texas; Toni C. Thomas and Jeff Wendell of Roanoke; Martha R. McManaway of Alexandria, VA; Maree S. Morgan and husband Forrest of North, VA; Sandra H. Saunders of Portsmouth, VA; great-niece Susan P. West and husband Ricky of Virginia Beach; and a host of other relatives, former students, and close friends. She grew up in Stewartsville,VA and graduated from Stewartsville High School in 1939; she then received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Roanoke College in 1943 and a Master of Science Degree from what is now Radford University in 1974. Her thirty-six years of experience as an educator in the science and math fields and in administration include Greensville County High School in Emporia, Blair Jr. High School in Norfolk, her home school of Stewartsville High, and William Byrd High School in Vinton where she joined the faculty in the fall of 1956. In the summer of 1972, she accepted the position as one of two assistant principals at William Byrd High School, a position she held until her retirement in 1983. She had two special career claims to fame. The first which followed her through the next generation was that of coaching the 1947-48 Stewartsville High School's boys’ basketball team to a winning season with only one loss. The second was the result of Arnold R. Burton, superintendent of Roanoke County Schools, appointing her the first female administrator in what was then District P on the senior high school level. On the recommendation of her principal, Robert A. Patterson, Christine was selected as an Outstanding Secondary Educator of America for 1974; chosen Vinton's 1981 Mother of the Year in Education; honored with a state life membership in the PTSA; and was a former member of Phi Delta Kappa, a Professional Education Fraternity. In 1958 she was initiated into membership of Theta Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma National Honorary Society for Women Educators where she served on numerous committees and twice as president. She was a longtime member of Roanoke County Retired Teachers Association in which she held the office of treasurer for 15 years. Christine grew up in the Stewartsville Methodist Church, now Mays Memorial United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School Classes of various ages and serving for a number of years as choir director and pianist. In 1980 she joined First Baptist Church, Roanoke, where she served on a number of committees; as a departmental Sunday School Director; and was a former member of the Heritage Singers, the choir for senior adults. She was an active member of the Woman's Missionary Union and the first WMU director to be asked to serve on what was then the Church Leadership Committee. Services will be conducted at Oakey's Vinton Chapel on Saturday, January 6, 2018 by Dr. Bryan Smith, with participation by Rev. Charles A. Krause. A private interment will take place at a later time. Visitation will be Friday, January 5 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Fuller Mission Scholarship Fund, First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 2799, Roanoke, VA 24001, or the Roanoke Rescue Mission. |
