About | James W. Leftwich, Jr., passed away peacefully September 26, 2022. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Mary C. Leftwich and James W. Leftwich, Sr., of Vinton, Virginia. Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Judith Nylander Leftwich; his daughters, Kathleen E. and her husband, Paul E. Savas; Kirsten A. and her husband William D. Sutherlin; and loving grandchildren, Alexis K., Annika L. and William “Thor” Sutherlin; his sister, Priscilla L. Harris and her children; and his brother, Timothy W. Leftwich and his wife Clara. Jim attended William Byrd High school where he was elected "most athletic" and was awarded the Prep All American football player in his senior year. He was known as a terror on the football field, but the epitome of a southern gentleman off the field. He received a four-year scholarship to East Carolina University and played varsity all four years. After graduating, he joined the United States Marine Corps as a second lieutenant and retired after earning the rank of Captain. During his service in Vietnam he earned many medals culminating in the Bronze Star with a V for Valor. Reynolds Metals hired him after the USMC and he enjoyed a thirty-two year career with them. His greatest joy was his family. “His life was gentle; and the elements so mixed in him, that nature might stand up and say to all the world this was a man.” In Lieu of flowers please send donations to St Jude’s Hospital. |
