About | Jack Eldridge Trent, 77, of Roanoke, born on June 8, 1942, passed away suddenly on Wednesday evening, October 16, 2019 after an extended illness. Jack joins his beloved wife of 42 years, Lois O. Trent, who died on August 10, 2019, in their forever home with our Lord. Jack was also preceded in death by his parents, John L. and Willie F. Trent; brothers, John L. Trent, Jr., James Loyd Trent, and Joseph A. Trent; sisters, Della T. Thompson and Ruby T. Garrett; niece, Diane T. Rice; nephews, Gary E. Thompson and Steven L. Thompson; sister-in-laws, Dorothy O. Stevens and Frances O. Flora; and brother-in-law, Julian A. Obenshain. Jack is survived by his sister, Lucy T. Hill, 13 nieces and nephews and their families; brother-in-laws, Rev. A. Kyle Flora and Samuel R. Stevens; sister-in-law, Joyce F. Obenshain, Lois’s 9 nieces and nephews and their families, and many close and dear friends who have been like family through the years including the Powells, the Kellys, the Mays (including God sons, Andy and Lee), Gary Lynch, Taylor Hardy, the Ruhlands, the Richerts, and his church families. Jack was born and raised in Roanoke. He graduated from William Byrd High School in 1961 and the University of Richmond in 1966. Jack grew up in Riverdale Baptist Church where he was ordained into the gospel ministry in 1966. He served as Minister of Youth at Grove Avenue Baptist Church in Richmond, Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Baskerville, Interim Pastor of Fort Lewis Baptist Church in Salem, Interim Pastor of Campbell Avenue Baptist Church in Lynchburg, and Minister of Youth at Belmont Baptist Church in Roanoke for 7 years. It was while serving as Youth Minister at Belmont that he met his future wife, Lois, a teacher and coach of some of his church youth members. Jack and Lois were later faithful members of Calvary Baptist Church. Jack began his career as a social worker in the Roanoke City Dept. of Social Services. Then he became Assistant Superintendent of Lynchburg Juvenile Detention Center. He spent 25 years as Director of Youth Haven I Group Home where he impacted the lives of and cared for many young people in the Roanoke area. Jack retired after serving as Superintendent of the Roanoke Valley Juvenile Detention Center leading a significant construction project while in this position. Jack found great enjoyment in spending time outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking. He spent over fifty years as a member of the PTL Hunt Club with endearing relationships among club members and other hunting friends in the Patterson Creek area. The family wishes to acknowledge with sincere appreciation the following physicians that provided compassionate care of Jack over the past years: Dr. Stephen Phillips and Dr. Elvis Pagan. Also we are grateful to the staffs of Brookdale of Roanoke, Good Samaritan Hospice, and The Harmony Collection of Roanoke who brought great joy and peace to Jack during his last years. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 20, 2019 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Oakeys Roanoke Chapel. A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, October 21, 2019 at 12 noon at Oakeys Roanoke Chapel.
