Sam was the oldest of three sons of Edwin S. Sutherland and Chloe Clevinger Sutherland. He was raised in Buchanan County, Va., and had lived in Roanoke, Va., and then in Fincastle, Botetourt County. He was a long-time schoolteacher and librarian, retiring after 45 years of service.
