About Karen Newton Pendleton, 60, of Vinton, Virginia, was welcomed home by her Savior, Christ Jesus, on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Roanoke, Va., on October 5, 1961. Karen was a 1979 graduate of William Byrd High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from Carson Newman College in 1983 and a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech in 1991.

She worked for the Roanoke County School System for 38 years. During her career she taught at Penn Forest, Glen Cove, Roland E. Cook, and Clearbrook Elementary schools, as well as William Byrd Middle School. She was promoted to Assistant Principal at Penn Forest Elementary in 1998 and was the Principal at both Clearbrook Elementary from 2002 to 2016 and at Penn Forest Elementary from 2016 to her retirement in 2021. Karen loved helping kids improve their reading skills, volunteering her time to assist with ESL training.

Her priority in life was spending time with her daughters, Emma and Lucy. She would shine when talking about their many accomplishments. Karen professed her faith in Christ Jesus early in life. She was a member of Bonsack Baptist Church and participated in the choir as well as helping with both the youth group and children’s Sunday School classes.

Karen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Matthew George Pendleton and her parents, Jimmy and Dorothy Newton.

She is survived by her daughters; her brother, Tommy Newton and wife, Mary Beth Newton; and her nephews and niece, Brendan Newton, Sarah Beth Newton, Landon Newton, Ben Pendleton, and Robert Pendleton.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. on Friday, September 2, 2022, at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel. Her Funeral Service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2022, at Bonsack Baptist Church with Dr. Chris Cadenhead officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton.

Karen had a passion for reading and developing a love for reading in her students. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a school or public library of your choice in her honor to help provide quality reading materials for children
