About	David Russell Short, 58, of Vinton, VA., went to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 4th, 2022. David grew up in Vinton, VA, where he graduated from William Byrd High and spent his career as an excavator with Russell Short Excavating. David loved Smith Mountain Lake, owned many boats, and enjoyed many summer days at the lake with his grandmother, family, and friends. During the last several years, David was a loving and devoted caretaker for his aging mother. They leaned on each other, loved one another unconditionally, and shared many early morning breakfasts together. David will be greatly missed by his mother and family. He was preceded in death by his father, Russell Lewis Short; grandmother, Frances Muriel Gray Short; grandfather, Robert Lee “Bob” Short, Sr.; uncle, Robert Lee Short, Jr.; cousin Christy Short; step-father, Paul E. Hartsel; brother-in-law, Ty Allen Hodges; and step-brother, Mark Edward Hartsel. He is survived by three children, Shayne, Whitney, and Sarah Short; mother, Bonnie Crotts Hartsel; sisters, Linda Short Hodges and Cathy Short Watson and Wayne; step-sisters Karen Hartsel Williams and Kim Hartsel Poff; step-mother Janet Carter Short; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family invites you to join them for a graveside service on Thursday, December 8, 2022, at 3:00pm at Mountain View Cemetery with Rev. Rodger Hogan officiating (1401 Mountain View Rd, Vinton, VA 24179). In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be made in memory of David Short to Midland Baptist Church, 460 Dale Ave., Vinton, VA 24179.
