About | Robert "Bob" Meade Gose, passed away in Worthington, Ohio, on June 19, 2023, at the age of 83. He and his twin sister, Jane, were born on September 4, 1939, in St. Paul, Va., to Robert Kyle Gose and Oneta Meade Gose. Bob's passion was service to family and his community, and he worked as a licensed clinical social worker, and in social work services, throughout his lifetime. He worked for 39 1/2 years at the Salem Veterans Administration Medical Center until his first retirement. He helped many veterans with substance abuse, working through traumas, and the transition to civilian life. In private practice with Total Life Counseling, Inc., and with Family Service of Roanoke Valley until his second retirement, Bob worked with many people from youth to elderly. Bob continued his service through fellowship, good works, and being a friendly neighbor to any and all in his day. Bob raised the bar for what it means to be "a good man" and that's no easy feat. He never met a stranger and continued to make lasting friendships even in his nursing home in Worthington. Bob attended Montvale High School and graduated from William Byrd High School in 1958. He graduated from Bridgewater College and Virginia Commonwealth University with bachelor's and master's degrees, respectively. Bob is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia States Gose; his children and their spouses, Lara Gose and Ed Gentry, Kevin Gose and Amy Gose, Chris Gose and Lyndsay Greer; grandchildren, Josh Ward, Sara Ward, Addison Gose, and Erin Gose; his twin sister, Jane Gose Lacy and her husband, Sushil Lacy; nieces, Rani Lacy Robinett and Suzy Lacy Gourdie, and their families and numerous extended family. Addison and Erin will remember Grand-daddy Bob as a "kind grand-daddy and a great listener with funny stories." Sara fondly remembers his stories about the weather patterns, history, and landmarks in the Roanoke Valley. Bob always enjoyed sharing his love of history and Virginia with his family and friends through stories of when he was younger. Josh enjoyed the trip to Williamsburg and Jamestown, and Bob's joy of strawberries at breakfast, some lunches, and many many desserts. Bob was a man of many hobbies and interests. He could often be found tinkering in his workshop on several projects. He had many pets from the farms he grew up on, to the family's cats and dogs over the years. He loved listening to music and strumming his guitar. He was an avid reader, especially on the topics of history, Appalachian culture, and social studies and counseling practices relating to his work. He enjoyed traveling with Pat, relaxing at the beach, and family camping trips. Bob was a member of the First Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va., and previous to that Riverland Road Baptist Church, in Roanoke. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2023, at First Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va., preceded by visitation at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Bob's memory to Family Service of Roanoke Valley, a community resource for mental health and well-being; Homes for Heroes, which builds custom homes nationwide for severely injured post-9/11 veterans; or Honor Flight Network, which sponsors travel for surviving World War II veterans to take part in a day of honor in Washington, D.C. The family would like to thank the care teams at ProMedica Hospice and Willow Brook Christian Home in Worthington who tended to Bob and his family's needs in his final days.
