About James William "Bill" Hufton Sr., 68, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Hazel Hufton; a sister, Vickie Hamlett; and his best four-legged friend, Ali. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Phyllis Caldwell Hufton; sons, Jay (Kim) Carter, Jimmy (Stephanie) Hufton; daughters, Sharie (Bill) Carey, Marcee (Chris) Cook; his grandchildren, James and Hanna Carter, Claire and Sophie Hufton, Kaitlyn, Alec, and Shannon Carey, Colten and Cohen Cook; sister, Marie Johnson; brother-in-law, David (JoAnne) Caldwell; sister-in-law, Susan Caldwell; a very special aunt and uncle, Sonny and Lona Johnson; as well as many dear relatives and friends. Bill was a member of Vinton Baptist Church. He coached and was involved in Roanoke Valley Sports for many years. He was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served during the Vietnam War. He was also a policeman for the City of Salem, then went on to United Parcel Service, where he retired in 1995 after 30 years of service. The family would like to thank Dr. William Fintel and the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice for their loving care of Bill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Vinton Baptist Church, The American Cancer Society , or the League for Animal Protection (LAP). A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at the Vinton Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. William R. Booth officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by the United States Marine Corps. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's East Chapel, 540-977-3909.
