About	Penny Chisom Akers, 54, of Vinton, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. She was a Carilion employee for many years and a longtime member of Goodview Baptist Church also attending Southside Baptist Church. During her career she achieved degrees as RN, BSN, MSN, and DNP. Penny loved to travel and taking vacations with her family to the beach listening to Jimmy Buffett with the Jeep top down and the doors off. She was predeceased by her father, Douglas M. Chisom. Surviving family includes her mother and step-father, Shelby Chisom Fisher and Walter Thomas Fisher, Sr.; husband of 25 years, Fred Wayne Akers; daughters, Megan Elizabeth Akers and Amanda Leigh Akers; step siblings, Walter and Sharon Fisher, Evie and Joe Alls, and Scott Fisher; sister-in-law, Diane Guthrie; brother-in-law, Ricky Akers, and many other relatives and friends. Special thanks are extended to family members Richard and Sandy Thomasson for their love and support and also to Carilion Hospice. A Celebration of Her Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the Lotz Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Rev. Joey Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 3, 2017 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
