About Curtis Ray Woodford, Jr., lately of Frederick, Maryland, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014 after a valiant fight with pancreatic cancer. Ray was born in Roanoke, Virginia September 14, 1949 and was brought up in Vinton, Virginia. A graduate of the University of Virginia and a certified public accountant, Ray worked many years in Washington, D.C. and southern Maryland. He loved his girls, Crystal Woodford and Danielle Woodford, his wife, Laura Wellons Woodford (and her son Tony Turner), his brothers Gary Woodford and David Woodford (wife Julia and son David), and his dogs and cat. Ray cheered the Boston Red Sox, which his Virginia and Maryland families never fully understood. A terrific high school golfer, Ray hurt his back as an adult and found a new joy, pool. Ray liked to play pool, teach pool, watch pool, buy new cues (and cases!), and especially win (most of the time) pool games with friends. It's quite a testament that Ray kept so many pool friends, because his shots seemed to improve when "friendly" wagers were made. Ray read voraciously, and his wit was desert-dry. Ray also enjoyed cooking, movies, and visiting Smith Mountain Lake and the Outer Banks. The family will celebrate Ray's life at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Evergreen Cemetery in Roanoke, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
