About Wayne Goodman, 74, of Roanoke, Va., passed away peacefully at home on Friday evening, February 24, 2017. He was a devoted father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. Wayne was a proud graduate of William Byrd High School, Class of 1961, where he was a varsity athlete, yearbook editor and Valedictorian, among many other honors. The first of his extended family to go to college, Wayne was a graduate of the College of William and Mary in 1965. He earned a Master’s degree in School Administration from Radford University. Wayne was an engaging and innovative high school government teacher and Assistant Principal, authoring one of the first curricula in Virginia to create greater historical context for slavery and African American studies in the Virginia History programming. A lifelong advocate of public education and teaching, he served as President of the Roanoke County Education Association. He left the field of education to pursue a distinguished career in real estate and served as President of the Roanoke Valley Realtor’s Association and many other Board positons there. Wayne’s leadership and talent for teaching benefitted not only high school students, but also hundreds and hundreds of adult professionals. He taught Real Estate licensing classes at The Mosley Flint School of Real Estate, served as Sales and Training Manager for several different firms, and trained many realtors in the Roanoke Valley for over 30 years. Since 1989 he had worked at Barker Realty, training and mentoring agents. Wayne had many passions. He loved music and sang in the choir at Covenant Presbyterian Church for many years. He loved to write and loved sports – all of them – and for years wrote for the Roanoke Times covering high school football and basketball games. His love of government led him to be an active participant in local politics. He served on the Roanoke Valley Democratic Committee for many years. Of all these, his greatest love was for his family. He lived for many years with his beloved daughter, Sarah, and her sons, Satchel, Silas and Michael; and daughter, Samantha, getting to be there first-hand for Michael and Samantha’s growing up and graduation, and currently for Silas’ and Satchel’s high school and middle school years. He was a kind, loving, and patient grandfather and father and husband to Patricia Banton Goodman (now deceased). His quiet strength and wisdom were a gift to all he encountered. He leaves behind three daughters, Kristi, Sarah and Jennifer; two sons-in-law, Les Roberts and Sean Dooley; nine grandchildren, Satchel, Silas, Michael, Samantha, Jack, Ryan, Anna, Carrie and Erin; a brother, Dennis Goodman; two sisters, Sandra Pruden and Peggy Brown; sister-in-law, Fay McDaniel; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends. The family will receive visitors from 4 until 6 p.m. on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at Oakey’s South Chapel. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 27, 2017, also at Oakey’s South Chapel.
