Mark Edward Spangler, 52, formerly of Aurora, Colo., passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2009, after a long illness at his parents home in Goode. Born in Anderson, Ind., on November 22, 1957, he was a son of Delbert R. Spangler, of Goode, and the late Marianna Howe Spangler. In addition to his father, he is survived by two children, N. Cody Spangler and B. Elias Spangler, both of Littleton, Colo.; a sister, Linda (Ray) Sandifer, of Vinton; a brother, David (Donna) Spangler, of Roanoke; stepmother, Rebecca Spangler, of Goode; former wife, Lynda Vaught Spangler, of Littleton, Colo.; a niece, Tiffany Meadows, of Vinton; two nephews, Todd (Lisa) Spangler, of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Justin (Jessica) Spangler, of Roanoke; numerous great-nieces and nephews; three stepsisters, Joy Lee (Mark) Pretty, Kendra (Donnie) Toney, and Ginger (Jon) Lovell, all of Lynchburg area and their children. Mark was a graduate of William Byrd High School in Vinton; received a B.S. degree from University of South Carolina; B.S. in aerospace engineering degree from Parks College of Saint Louis University; M.S. systems management degree from the Air Force Institute of Technology, USAF Air University; served as a Captain in the United States Air Force and later employed by the U.S. Air Force as an Environmental Engineer at Lowry Air Force Base and Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado, and was a member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church, Lynchburg. A memorial service will be conducted 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, in Fort Hill United Methodist Church by the Rev. Philip M. Waltz and the Rev. Janet D. Hawkins. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fort Hill U.M.C., 106 Oakridge Blvd., Lynchburg, Va. 24502 and or Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory, 434-239-2405, is assisting the family.
