About	Dennis R. Barker, 56, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. He graduated in 1972 from William Byrd High School where he played football. Dennis worked at Grumman prior to being associated with Empire Foods, along with his wife for the last 13 years, since the company's beginning. He was also an avid Virginia Tech football fan and loved his home on Smith Mountain Lake. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Barker. Surviving is his wife of 27 years, Nora Lynn Barker; mother, Jerry S. Kelley and her husband, Bobby; four brothers, Marvin Barker, Randy Barker and wife, Linda, Kevin Barker, and Dale Barker and wife, Kim; sister, Sharon Karnes; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lew and Velma Thompson; brother-in-law, Glenn Thompson and wife, Laura; several nieces and nephews, including "his boys," Cameron Thompson and Josh Barker; his dog and cat, Winnie and Bumper; and many other loving relatives and friends also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Friday, October 15, 2010, at Vinton Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Booth officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, Planned Pethood Clinic, 18401 Virgil H. Goode Highway, Rocky Mount, Va. 24151, (540-489-3491) or to the Roanoke Fire EMS, 713 Third Street, SW, Roanoke, Va. 24016. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 14, 2010, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 540-982-2221.
