About | Roland Hughes Malone, Sr., 84, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2015. Born in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Allen and Stella Blair Malone, Roland was the second of four children. He was a 1949 graduate of Lucy Addison High School, Roanoke. In 1954, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from The Ohio State University, and in 1973 from Radford University he received a Master of Science degree, also, in Education. He did further study in Education Administration at the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. At age79, Roland graduated (the oldest in his class) cum laude, from Liberty University with a Master of Arts degree in Evangelism and Church Planting. He was a WWII Army Veteran. The 1960's held many "Firsts" for Malone. He was the first Director and Swimming Instructor for the Boy Scout Summer Camp at Snow Creek (VA). During this time, he was also the first Director of Roanoke City's Neighborhood Job Program for Underprivileged Youth. Additionally, he was the first Director of the Total Action Against Poverty's Swimming Program (Roanoke). In 1967, Malone became the first Black Head Coach in the Roanoke Valley at a predominately white school. Coach Malone retired from teaching and a very successful coaching career after 32 years with the Roanoke County School System. Roland H. Malone, Sr. was a man who wore many hats. He liked to refer to himself as "Your # 1 Friend. " This was a well-known description as he served as Associate Pastor of Goodview Church of God (Bedford County), a former Church of God State Trustee, a former real estate salesman, and a real estate investor for RHM Properties (residential and commercial). He was also President of Malone's Peake (a banquet facility). Coach was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He moved to Hampton a year ago, and became a member of Joynes Road COG. Rev. Malone was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Shelton Reamy; 2 brothers, Edward and Bobby Malone; and a sister, Doris M. Hancock. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of nearly 20 years, Edna Smith Malone; 3 sons- Roland Jr. (Betty Brown), Rodney (Kelly) and Reginald (Adriele); a daughter, Tiffani (Stephen) Brown and eight grandchildren- Andre Poppe; Marie, Jamaal, and D'Vante Malone; Joseph and Joshua Wiltrout; Miles and Shane Brown. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at Noon at Joynes Road Church of God, with visitation at 11:00am at the church. Burial will be on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 11:00am at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. The family suggests memorial contributions to The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, c/o Wm. Byrd High School, 2902 Washington Ave, Vinton, VA 24179.
