About Cradled in the loving arms of her husband and children, Jan Elizabeth Atkins Mock, 65, passed away peacefully in their Mt. Pleasant home on Sunday, November 28, 2021.
Born in Radford, Virginia, Jan was the oldest of the four “J’s” born to the Rev. John O. and Joan M.Atkins. An accomplished flautist, she graduated William Byrd High School in Vinton, Virginia as its 1974 Valedictorian and Senior Class President, then attended the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill graduating with a degree in Microbiology and Hematology. It was there that she met the love of her life, Dr. Michael L. Mock, DDS. Jan and Mike Mock were married in Mt. Pleasant on April 21, 1979.
Jan was absolutely fascinated in counting trillions of microorganisms as a microbiologist at the Cabarrus Health System, retiring in July 2016 after 40 years, and more recently at the Cabarrus Brewing Company.
She was a member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) for all of her 40 professional years as a medical technologist. She was passionate about horses and for years was involved with the West Stanly Saddle Club.
Jan and Mike were blessed with two children: Elizabeth Leigh Parker (Tim) of Nanaimo, BC, CA and Jonathan Lee Mock (Teresa) of New Bern, NC. She was “Jamma” to her grandchildren Avery, Mia, and
Bohannon.
Jan is survived by her sisters, Joy Farwell (Kenny) and Jena Massoud (George); her brother, John W. Atkins (Scarlett), brother and sister-in-law Pam Langill (David), and Wayne Mock (Sandra);
stepmother and sister Anne B. Atkins and Patrice Koch (Ken). She also leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends who have all been fortunate to know her lifetime of kindness and love.
The family is forever grateful to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region for the compassionate care they provided.
To honor Jan’s wishes, her family asks that her life be celebrated individually. There will be a memorial Facebook page created to publicly share stories, comments, and/or photos of Jan with family and friends.
