CAPT Karoly, a native of Allentown, Pennsylvania, began his naval career in 1981. He graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nautical Science/Marine Transportation/Marine Engineering and a United States Coast Guard Third Mate’s License (unlimited tonnage). He received his Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in 2007.

Following graduation from the USMMA, CAPT Karoly joined the United States Navy. CAPT Karoly spent the majority of his active duty time in the USS PRINCETON (CG 59). While assigned in PRINCETON, he served as the First Lieutenant, Ordnance Officer, and Assistant Weapons Officer. In February 1991, CAPT Karoly was released from active duty and immediately joined the Military Sealift Command (MSC). He served as Third Officer/Third Mate in the USNS COMFORT and as Second Mate/Navigator in USNS CAPELLA during Operation DESERT STORM and DESERT FAREWELL.

On his return from overseas in November 1991, CAPT Karoly joined the Naval Reserve. His assignments have included: NR AMCC/ABFC Command (Officer-in-Charge); NR ABFC Communications Headquarters (Operations Officer); NR COMLOGRU TWO (Operations Officer); Inshore Boat Unit 26 (Commanding Officer); NR ABFC Communications Headquarters (Deputy CDR); NR Naval Beach Group TWO Det 206 (Executive Officer); NR Naval Beach Group TWO Det 206 (Commanding Officer); the Naval Coastal Warfare Group TWO (Executive Officer (N7) Integrated Training Team); and, NR Military Sealift Command HQ, Washington, D. C. (Commanding Officer). In September 2009, CAPT Karoly was selected for his fifth command, NR OPNAV Detachment Site-R.

CAPT Karoly’s military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (with two Gold Stars), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with two Gold Stars), the Navy Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Battle Efficiency Award, and various other Service and Campaign awards.

Our Whitehall High School military alumni are some of the most outstanding people we know and this page recognizes them and everything they have done!
