Alumni Stories
Scott Richard Smith
Class of 1976
1 year ago, I had just been cured of Stage IV cancer, and my home and everything I owned burnt to the ground in the Eaton Fire in Altadena, California (along with 9,000 other homes. Devastating doesn't begin to cover it. We had paid off the mortgage, and at that time had no insurance -- we had been cancelled, ironically, because our area had been declared a fire risk zone.
We are yet to begin rebuilding. Currently staying in lovely Mission Viejo, California awaiting the outcome of a lawsuit against the party who was responsible for causing the fire. Fingers crossed that we get a good settlement to finance rebuilding our lives... I am currently doing a bit of conservation work on paintings from the 'plein aire' period. The photo shows the only thing that survived the fire.
