1965 Davenport West High School alumni Dennis Shippey
• he was selected to the Texas Senior Games Hall of Fame, the first single sport swimmer ever selected. inducted into the 2011 Texas Senior Games Hall of Fame.
• High school state champion and All American in the breaststroke
• Inducted into the Iowa High School Swimming Hall of Fame in 1996.
• 1976-2004 Shippey coached swimming and served as Aquatic Director for Pasadena ISD in Pasadena,, Texas
2007 Theron Pickle Lifetime Achievement in Swimming Award presented in Austin at the Texas Swim Coaches State Association (only 7 recipients
• Retirement came as a result of a diagnosis of Early On-Set Alzheimer’s
• After retirement, Shippey still swam competitively, placing him in the top 10 in 18 individual events and 13 relays in the US Master’s division.
• In 2007-2008, Shippey was ranked as the 4th and 5th fastest 50 Meter Long Course Breaststroker in the world by FINA in his age group.

With a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Dennis continued working for two years before retirement. Swimming became his passion as he worked to enjoy whatever time he had available. His accomplishments during that ten year period were an inspiration to everyone who met him. Dennis Shippey passed away Aug 31, 2011 (Obituary QCTimes)
