Alumni Stories
Michael Cardenas
Class of 1973
I graduated in 1973 and joined the Army to avoid being drafted. Five weeks later in Basic Training I found out that President Nixon stopped the draft. I stayed in and rose to the rank of SFC. At the age of 31 years old, I attended Officer Candidate School and I rose through the ranks to Captain. During my military career I was able to hold 15 different jobs. From Combat Engineer, explosive expert, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare expert, and many more. I retired in 1994 with a 4 year degree in Business Management and later became a Math teacher in Newark, NJ. I later retired in 2012 from teaching and now I am enjoying my retirement. The thing that makes me proud of my career is that in high school, I hated math and when I graduated and joined the Army that is all I have been doing since. Also some faculty told me that if I had brains I would be dangerous would never amount to anything. I would like to give credit to my Drafting teacher Mr. Gregory Cordano who believed in me and told me never to give up and never accept anyone's put down. Thanks
