| About Me | I carry my adornments only on my soul, decked with deeds instead of ribbons, mantled in my good name and crowned with the white plume of freedom! ~Cyrano de Bergerac Since many of you have asked about life here in the Seattle area, here’s my take after 10+ years here. I haven’t had to shovel my driveway ever since moving – we get some snow, but only once I think more than 3-4 inches. The people in Washington have no idea how to drive in snow – they either don’t change their driving style or slow to 5 mph for everything One inch of snow shuts down entire cities, including Seattle Out here, “It’s snowing and not safe for me to drive to work (in a minor flurry)” is a valid reason not to go to work. They have voter initiatives out here, you get enough people to sign on and it goes on the ballot – no legislator needed. Some are ridiculous, some are worthwhile. You have to steal a car 7 times before you are looking at real jail time I think it has reached 100 degrees once in 10 years, they have no idea what humidity really is out here. Washington natives have no discernable accent – in fact, the lack of an accent may be their attribute. For much of the year, there are areas where you can go skiing in the morning and then sailing in the afternoon. It doesn’t rain out here as much as people think (as of today 24 straight days with no rain) It is easier to get a concealed carry gun permit in Washington than it is to get a Driver’s license. No one in Washington understands mass transit – we have rail lines that will serve about 10% of the population, yet no consistent rail service through Seattle and the surrounding suburbs where everyone commutes from. Their idea of mass transit is busses – which is great except they travel on the same congested roads. School kids used to have to pass this test called the WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning) – It sucked, many teachers specifically taught to the WASL, but the kids did not learn basics. Finally got a new State Education Superintendent that is getting rid of it. Bars close at 2:00 and it is strictly enforced, unlike NYC. Beer and wine can be purchased at any supermarket or 7/11 – booze is only in liquor stores. Sunday sales are OK, just nothing between 2:00-6:00 am. I’ll come up with more later, or I’m glad to answer specific questions. But in short, I love living out here, I think growing up on Long Island I never realized how cool it was t...(read more) |
