About Me | I joined the Navy, attended Submarine School and Electricians School. Crewed on four different submarines all diesel boats. Made three trips above the artic circle during cold war surveilance of the Soviets, four Mediteranean trips while on the east coast. Served on the submarine Blueback which was built here in Pascagoula in 1959. Took her to the Pacfic in 1960. Made one trip to the Western Pacfic in 1961. Got up real close and personal with the Russian Navy on a special intelligence operation. (the pine trees are tall along the East Coast of Russia and Vladivastock harbor is a busy place. I qualified as Officer of the Deck and Diving Officer. My last Submarine duty was in Key West, Fl. where I was Chief of the Boat. My wife and two sons and I left there in 1970 when I recieved orders th the USS America CVA 66 (Thats an aircraft carrier) I boarded the America in Subic Bay, Phillipines and then to the Gulf of Tonkin for air operations against the North Vietnameese. We returned home to Norfolk, Va. on Dec 23 1970 and enjoyed Christmas with my family. My youngest son had a hard time remembering me. My next tour was Naval Air Station, Meridian, Ms. for three years then to beautiful Guantananmo Bay, Cuba for three years of instructor duty. We cried when we had to leave. Next came the Destroyer Tender Sierra in Charleston, SC. I had made Master Chief and was Repair Department Administrative Division Officer. My last Naval assignment was in Charleston also. I was Electrical Repair Division Officer and Command Master Chief at the Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity. I retired in August 1979 and moved my family to Pascagoula, Ms. I taught NJROTC at Pascagoula for a short time and then went into support services for the Navy with Raytheon Company. I performed Communications systems design and some structural modificationdesign on the Battle ships Iowa and Wisconsin when they were reactivated. I stayed in support of Navy Contracts at the Ingalls Shipbuilding Facility here in Pascagoula working communication systems testing and acceptance for the Navy on the Aegis Cruisers and The DDG 51 Class Destroyers. I formally retired in Sept 2002. After retiring from the Navy in 79 my wife and I bought a small Marina in Moss Point, Ms. We operated it until 2005 when we sold it to the Audobon Society for nature studies site. We contracted to sell the place to the Audobon Society and had bought a home in Pascagoula. While in the process of moving, Hurricane Katrina destroyed the marina, our home that we had not sold yer had four feet of water and the new home in Pascagoula had three feet. Needless to say we were in dire straits. Both my wife and I worked some very long and hot days to get a place clean enouth to live until we could get the new house livable. The Audobon Society came through though and we sold out the marina. The class of 55 had a reunion in September, i think, and my wife insisted that I go. It was our fiftieth. I made the trip to Kansas and really enjoyed the visit. I was asked about the storm and after telling my story I was handed a couple checks, one from Dean Ebel and one from Jack Lonsinger. I will forever be grateful for helping us get back on our feet. We used the money to replace tools lost in the storm so that we could rebuild. My wife and I got prety good at hanging sheetrock and painting. But that is all in the past and we are into a new challange. I bought a resturant for my oldest son to operate. He has operated resturants for over 18 years and his degree in in reaturant management. We are quite happy with the way that operation is going. In November my wife Sue and I celebrated our Fiftieth aniversary. She is still my bride. Dean Ebel and Viola came from Shreveport, La and took some really great pictures and video.
