About Sean McCaney passed away on Saturday April 11, 2026.

Sean was born in 1967 in St. Louis, MO to Kathryn (nee Titzell) and Edward McCaney. They returned to the District when he was two and Sean later moved to California where he attended junior high school. They then relocated to Bethesda, MD where he attended Walter Johnson High School. He graduated from Frostburg State University with a BA honors in Philosophy and History and pursued graduate work in Philosophy at George Washington University. Sean was a Management and Program Analyst for the Office of the Inspector General of the National Archives and Records Administration where he formed lasting friendships and pursued his duties with dedicated attention to his responsibilities. Sean was an enthusiastic gamer from an early age initiated by D&D adventures with his childhood friends and continued into his adult life augmented by weekly trivia nights with his adult friends. Sean’s sense of humor was keen. He always had an eye out for the absurd. Sharp, playful, mischievous but never cruel, he, like Sabatini”s Scaramouche was born “with the gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad”. He intensely disliked the cellphone and the culture of distraction it has fostered and resisted owning one in his personal life. He deeply loved his parents and his devotion to his mother in her last years was absolute and committed. Sean had a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts and was a longtime member of the Shakespeare Theater Company. He never stopped learning and was an avid reader and student of the Great Courses. He also was very knowledgeable about American Gothic Fantasy writers especially Lovecraft and had made a pilgrimage to Providence in his early years. He was an ardent lover of animals especially dogs whose unconditional love matched his own for those in his life.

Sean is pre-deceased by his parents, Kay and Ed and his dog Laddie. He is survived by his aunt and uncle, Sandy and Jim and his loving cousins, Delia and Camille.
