Dan farmed for the Reber and Smalley Farms in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. He served in the United States Marine Corp in Camp LeJune, N.C., where he played football on the marine football team. Dan was also a member of the USHS undefeated football team of 1955. Dan was married to classmate Anna Smith (Patchett) for 50 years.
