| About Me | I was a classroom teacher for 34 years (K-4) at three diverse schools in Urbana. My classroom practice centered on in-depth integrated investigations, encompassing a year of "travel" to a different time/place. The yearlong inquiry involved collaborations with each group of children/families. Each theme took on a unique focus dependent on interests, needs, standards & family /community resources as we co-created hands-on project oriented units, allowing children from all backgrounds to live out experiences of traveling to another time/place. Constructing authentic experiences demanded extensive research. I traveled to Britain, Japan & throughout the U.S. to procure books, artifacts, & documents I frequently taught in multiage classrooms or looped with students in order to stay with students for multiple years. I also had many opportunities to travel and work with other educators throughout the country. My classroom practice was the primary focus of nine U of I doctoral theses / early research projects focusing on science teaching, literacy and early childhood education. Since 2002. I have been a Regional Coordinator of the Illinois NBPTS Comprehensive Support System. In June of 2008. I retired from classroom teaching. After having a reunion with many of my 600 plus former students, I began teaching educational methods classes at ISU and supervising student teachers at EIU.
