Drowning victim's identity released
A man who drowned early Sunday morning was identified Monday by the Onslow County Sheriff's Department as 34-year-old Joseph P. Rigby of Sneads Ferry.
Emergency personnel and sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 1 a.m. to a residence at 400 Waterway Drive, the Sneads Ferry home of Don Mercer. About 100 people were gathered there for a party, according to a Sheriff's Department report, and witnesses at the scene told authorities that Rigby was found in the bottom of the swimming pool.
Investigators don't know how long Rigby had been in the pool before being discovered, the Sheriff's Department reported.
Results of a Monday autopsy revealed the cause of death to be drowning, according to the Sheriff's Department, and investigators are awaiting results of a toxicology examination.
