Joined Naval Aviation at Grosse Ile NAS in 1966, served with several squadrons at both Grosse Ile NAS and Selfridge ANG Base, flew as an air crewman, and retired 30 years later as a Master Chief Petty Officer.

Shortly after graduating with a civil engineering degree from Michigan Tech, I was drafted into the US Army by John F. Kennedy. I was at the time building bridges in Los Angeles. After basic training at Ft. Ord, California (with the M1 rifle), I was stationed as a Pfc at the Army's Cold Region Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Hanover, NH. There I conducted research on frozen ground and ice. I was deployed on TDY for 3 months to the Army's under the ice research station at Camp Century in northern Greenland. No guns or war there, just 1-mile thickness of glacier ice to bedrock, and a camp with 120 men powered by a nuclear reactor. It was daylight 24 hours a day when I arrived and dark 24 hours a day when I departed. Over a period of 5 years CRREL drilled a hole and took ice core to the bottom of the glacier. Analysis of the trapped gasses and particulate matter led to 100,000 years of past climate data. . . . After being released from active duty in 1964 as a Spec 5, I attended graduate school and then returned to CRREL as a civilian, just avoiding the Vietnam War. I must say that the Army gave me a new perspective on life.

John was a student all his life in the Trenton school systems, but left for Arkansas in 1964 where he graduated from HS . He attended the Naval Academy, and in 1968 left for Vietnam. He retired from the Marines in 1994.
