I entered the Air Force as a ROTC graduate from Kansas State University in 1972, and graduated from Pilot Training at Williams AFB, AZ, in 1973. I flew the KC-135A for Strategic Air Command (SAC) as a tanker pilot at Ellsworth AFB, SD, from 1973-78. I then trained as an Air Traffic Control Officer and was Chief of Air Traffic Control Operations at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH, from 1979-81. While at Wright-Pat, I also flew the CT-39A as VIP Airlift pilot for Military Airlift Command (MAC). I next flew the E-3B/C as an Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) surveillance pilot at Tinker AFB, OK, for Tactical Air Command (TAC) from 1982-1986. In 1987, I served a one-year “remote” assignment as an AWACS Liaison Officer to the Republic of Korea Air Forces at 7th Air Force HQ at Osan AB, Korea. After that assignment, I served as the Chief of Flight Operations for Air Force Contract Management Division (AFCMD) at Kirtland AFB, NM, from 1988-90, where I managed the Air Force’s Flight Acceptance program for new and remodeled Air Force and selected Navy aircraft. My last assignment was a KC-135R pilot at Grissom AFB, IN, for SAC and the newly formed Air Mobility Command (AMC) from 1991-92. I retired in 1992 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after 20+ years of service.
